Some words of Jesus:

“Let not your hearts be troubled.

Believe in God; believe also in me.”
                                                                 John 14 v 1

Some words of St Paul

about praying for national leadership:

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,

intercession and thanksgiving be made for

all people— for kings and all those in authority,

that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all

godliness and holiness.”
                                                                I Timothy 2 vv 1-2

God Almighty, Lord of men and nations,

look with mercy on our country.

Give grace and wisdom to Elizabeth our Queen,

her ministers of state,

and all in authority under her;

and so direct their counsels and guide their decisions

that we may be led

into the ways of justice, freedom and peace,

to the honour of your great name,

through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

God bless our land;

God guide our rulers;

God resolve our differences;

God revive our churches;

God forgive our selfishness;

God protect our homes;

God strengthen our faith,

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

                                                   (Maurice Wood, former Bp of Norwich)

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one

and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall

not perish but have eternal life.”
                                                                  John 3 v 16

A prayer for a time of national anxiety

O God, our refuge and strength in every hour of need,

raise up among us at this time

faithful and fearless men who know that

in loyalty to your word and will alone
can a nation find true peace and security.

To such and all in authority give a right judgement

and the courage to follow your way, whatever the cost;

for the good of this people

and for the honour of your name, Amen.

God and Father of us all,

who through the self-sacrifice of your Son

reconciled the world to yourself,

and charged us with the ministry of your peace:

by the healing influence of your Spirit

inspire and direct those who are called to bring

reconciliation to areas of strife and discord;

that through their ministry

men may learn to give and forgive, to listen and to love,

after the example of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

“I have told you these things,
so that in me you may have peace.
In this world you will have trouble.
But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

                                                      Jesus; John 16 v 33

Comfort, O merciful Father,

by thy Word and Holy Spirit

all who are afflicted or distressed,

and so turn their hearts unto thee,

that they may serve thee in truth

and bring forth fruit to thy glory.

Be thou, O Lord, their succour and defence,

through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

                                                    (Philip Melanchton, 1497-1560)
